Carnegie Library

Thread were asked by a community group to explore the space available in an existing library in Coventry and come up with creative means of maximising its use for a range of flexible purposes, whilst keeping the books at the heart of the building.

The space available was explored both practically to ensure people and books could flow easily through the spaces and creatively to see how the formality of the historic library space could be reimagined. This looked at the insertion of a family of flexible pieces of furniture that celebrated the architecture of the existing building, displayed the book stock and allowed easy partitioning to create new spaces within the library for groups to gather or individuals to study.
