Thread Architects were asked to imagine a playful, fun outdoor play space for the pre-school room at the first floor of a nursery on top of an existing flat roof area.

The nursery had an idea to convert an existing area of flat roof into a play area for the pre-school room that lacked direct access to the outdoors from the first floor level. The brief was for a free-flowing space with some cover for year round use. It was to be useable by all and encourage independent play for children of all abilities.

Thread created 3 sketch schemes that explored ideas of shelter and covered play space, connection between the roof top and the play area below and varying levels to divide the space into different zones and create ramps and slopes for play.
