One year ago today Andy took a step into the unknown and started his first full day’s work at Thread Architects. We couldn’t have wished for a better first year of business. Within the first few weeks of Thread opening up full time, our first competition entry for Self Build on a Shoestring was named as one of the 7 finalists so we went to see one of our first designs being discussed by Kevin McCloud, Ted Stevens from the National Custom and Self Build Association and Charlie Luxton on stage at Grand Designs Live.
This has fused our passion for self-build and it’s been great discussing the design with lots of people also looking to take on a self-build project.
Back in the office, with recommendations from new and previous clients, colleagues and friends inquiries began coming in from people looking to do work on their homes and build new houses. The projects have ranged from porch additions to complete renovation and extension of derelict homes. Every design has been a response to the clients brief and needs, leading to a varied portfolio of work, which we cannot wait to see turn into built projects. Our first site sign board has gone up in Calow, Derbyshire where a bungalow refurbishment is about to start on site any day, and this will be followed with projects for a sensitive addition to a 1930’s home in Dronfield and a contemporary side extension in Sheffield, which should be starting on site later this year.
Commercial projects are also starting to develop. We’ve met with companies looking to expand into new premises, or considering how derelict buildings could be best put to new uses, perhaps as a new Thread Architects office?! We’ve also enjoyed putting our skills to use in our local communities, Andy has become an active member of the Bolsover Civic Society and Rachel is helping Stannington Library take its first steps as a volunteer run community resource. As well as this we have built our own mobile pop-up office, which has appeared in Chesterfield and Sheffield and we’re hoping to pop-up somewhere new to celebrate our first birthday!
To keep our design work progressing, we are continuing to tutor at Universities. Andy will be a regular undergraduate tutor at Nottingham University this academic year and we’ve kept using our spare (!) time to enter design competitions, most recently with our shortlisted entry for the RIBA North East StreetScape competition. Others are currently in progress so perhaps there will be more to announce soon…
Our first year has been busy, at times hard work but always enjoyable and greatly rewarding. Our thanks go out to everyone we have worked with and all of our clients that have taken us on in our first year of business. We look forward to developing all your projects and can’t wait to see what the next 12 months bring!
