Seven Sisters

A competition entry to reinvent a World War II sea fort into an astronomy centre.

The Redsand Fort cannot be saved.

Instead the towers are hollowed out. A mixer is installed in the central Tower. Basalt is combined with cement, sea water and sand from the English Channel to make a concrete which is sprayed onto the fort formwork, imprinting the fort on its outer skin, encasing new spaces within- a curved roofed Planetarium and complex of cave like sleeping areas orbit the Observatory.

The rusting metal walls fall into the sea, exposing the Sisters – rough at first, soon polished smooth by their new environment.
