Currently under construction on site is this complete reimagination of a family home outside Ashbourne.

The existing house was an unremarkable three-bedroom detached house that enjoyed fantastic views towards the southern Peak District. The layout was limited and cellular and did not meet the needs of modern living.

The former home was opened to create large open plan living areas on the ground floor. The existing fabric was upgraded with new high-performance windows and doors and insulated render and plasterboard to increase thermal efficiency. A large side and rear extension in render and timber cladding wraps around the house to create a new entrance, living room, and snug on the ground floor and three separate bedrooms each picked out in separate gables on the first floor.

The extensions take inspiration from the forms and scale of the existing house but are modern in their character. On the ground floor the folding render walls enclose external and internal seating areas. The timber gables tie the forms together with the simple rhythm and use of timber cladding that soften their appearance and scale. The overall appearance of the existing house is softened and simplified with simple openings and render finish. The finished work will create a modern family home that will maintain the use of the house for generations to come.
